Honduras has a population of 7.2 million (46% urban), with 50 percent of the population under the age of 19. In 2004, gross national income per capita was $1,030.00, compared to $3,600.00 for the Latin American and Caribbean Region. Twenty-four percent of the population lives on less that $1.00 per day, and 44 percent live on less than $2.00 per day. Overall, 64 percent of the population lives in poverty. The highest incidence of poverty is found in rural zones, where 70.2 percent of households lack sufficient income to meet basic needs, and 58.4 percent are living below the extreme poverty line. In urban areas, extreme poverty reaches around 30 percent. In 2004, potable water coverage was 82.2 percent, and basic sanitation coverage was 76.7 percent , leaving 1.3 million Hondurans without potable water and 1.7 million without basic sanitation.
